Lebanon’s Berri Rejects Talks as Israel Orders New Evacuations Under Fragile Ceasefire

The stance points to a stall in U.S. diplomacy that prolongs civilian risk.

Overview

  • Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said there will be no negotiations with Israel until the war stops, as Israeli forces ordered residents to leave more villages in southern Lebanon.
  • The Israeli military also told people in 11 towns to move at least 1,000 meters from homes, saying it was acting against Hezbollah after a ceasefire breach.
  • Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported 2,679 deaths from Israeli attacks since March 2, a tally that also covers the ceasefire period and does not separate civilians from fighters.
  • A U.S.-brokered ceasefire that began on April 16 lowered large battles, yet Israeli strikes and Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks have continued in the south.
  • Israel maintains a self-declared 10 km buffer inside Lebanon with demolitions of sites it calls Hezbollah infrastructure, while recent bombardments killed at least 13 people in Habbuch, Zrariye, and Tyre.
