Lead Plaintiff in Case That Weakened Voting Rights Act Identified as Jan. 6 Participant

The revelation raises fresh questions about who engineered the challenge to federal voting protections.

Overview

  • Democracy Docket reported Tuesday that Phillip “Bert” Callais, the lead plaintiff in Louisiana v. Callais, attended the Jan. 6 Stop the Steal protest and posted photos and video from the Capitol grounds.
  • In court papers, Callais was portrayed as a non–African American voter from Brusly, Louisiana, whose district changed after redistricting, and he said he served on a local board of supervisors in 2024.
  • His social media shows years of election-denial claims, including calling elections rigged, pushing hand-counted paper ballots, amplifying false noncitizen voting claims, and defending convicted Colorado clerk Tina Peters.
  • He also dismissed concerns about mail voting for disabled and older voters, writing in February, “Find someone to haul you to the polls.”
  • The Supreme Court’s ruling last week narrowed how race can be considered in drawing districts, which experts say reduces Black political power, and the new reporting has drawn praise for Callais from election-denial figures like Seth Keshel.
