LAX Approves Higher Rideshare, Taxi and Limo Fees Linked to SkyLink Opening

The increases will begin when the SkyLink train debuts this summer to push more trips away from crowded terminal curbs.

Overview

  • On March 9, airport commissioners unanimously backed a new access-fee structure covering Uber, Lyft, taxis and limousines.
  • The plan sets a $6 charge for pick-ups and drop-offs at the LAX-It/Ground Transport Center and $12 for direct terminal-curb access, up from the current $4 pickup fee.
  • Today’s schedule charges rideshare companies $4 to pick up and nothing for drop-offs, with taxis paying $4 to pick up and limousines $5, and no drop-off fees for either.
  • Los Angeles World Airports says the higher fees aim to reduce congestion and encourage use of the SkyLink automated people mover, which officials say will loop the terminals in about 10 minutes.
  • Uber argues the 140% curbside fee hike will likely be passed to riders, could reduce demand for airport trips and may cost drivers roughly $1,000 in earnings per quarter.
