Overview
- U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen announced the proposed Evergreen Community Safety Act to require social media companies to fulfill federal warrants tied to credible threats within 72 hours, with a possible seven-day extension for large files.
- Colorado’s companion proposal, led by state Rep. Tammy Story with Sen. Lisa Cutter, would set a 24-hour turnaround for major platforms responding to Colorado search warrants, with introduction expected in the coming weeks.
- Officials say platforms now often take 30–35 days per step and that a multi-warrant process in the Evergreen case stretched to about 75 days, with key data arriving only after the Sept. 10 shooting.
- Pettersen is seeking bipartisan support and consulting with social media companies, while last year’s similar state effort passed the legislature but was vetoed by Gov. Jared Polis over other provisions.
- Pettersen also outlined separate bills for DOJ-funded safe firearm storage boxes and grants to expand training on Extreme Risk Protection Orders for local agencies.
