Overview
- The LAUSD school board voted Tuesday to approve a fiscal stabilization plan with amendments that largely restored funding for the Black Student Achievement Plan for 2027-28.
- Board member Kelly Gonez’s amendment returned $50 million for BSAP in 2027-28 and called for staff to seek another $25 million, while Karla Griego’s amendment used a $175 million draw from a post-employment benefits trust to remove BSAP from the 2028-29 plan.
- The district kept proposed deep reductions to the Student Equity Needs Index, which the plan pegs at about $400 million in 2027-28 and $500 million in 2028-29 and says those cuts could eliminate roughly 4,500 full-time equivalent positions.
- LAUSD’s fiscal gap traces to the end of one-time COVID relief, rising costs, falling enrollment and newly ratified labor contracts that add about $1.2 billion a year, a mix that already prompted more than 650 job cuts in May.
- The board will revisit a revised stabilization plan in September, with more public comment and separate votes required before specific layoffs or program eliminations take effect while the district warns reserves could be exhausted without further action.
