- Lau Siu-ming, known as Ming Sir, died at about 6pm on Wednesday, Sept 2, and his death was confirmed in reports citing voice actor Ding Yue and acknowledged by Hong Kong’s culture chief.
- Officials issued public tributes but gave no cause of death; reporting notes Lau had been critically ill in recent years and stepped back from the public eye.
- Lau was among the first Hong Kong dancers to train in Europe, studying at l’Ecole Supérieure de Danse in Cannes and performing works such as Rebirth of the Phoenix and with the Brussels Ballet du XXe Siècle in the 1960s.
- After returning to Hong Kong in 1967 he became a familiar face on television and in films, delivering memorable roles while also founding dance groups and teaching new performers.
- He served on the LCSD art panel, received an HKAPA honorary fellowship and the HKADC Life Achievement Award, and his death is expected to prompt tributes and reflections on his role shaping Hong Kong’s performing arts scene.
