Latvian Parliament Approves Interim Coalition Led by Andris Kulbergs

The short-lived cabinet will steer the country to parliamentary elections on 3 October under a platform that ties national security to economic policy.

Overview

  • The Saeima voted 66–25 to confirm the new government formed by United List, New Unity, the Union of Greens and Farmers and the National Alliance with Andris Kulbergs as prime minister.
  • Key ministerial posts were confirmed: Baiba Braže remains foreign minister and Raivis Melnis was named defense minister, while several other cabinet figures kept their portfolios.
  • The cabinet has an explicit interim mandate and will govern only until parliamentary elections on 3 October, when the 15th Saeima will form the next coalition.
  • Kulbergs said the government was negotiated unusually fast—within ten days—and framed its work around speed, responsibility and linking economic policy to national security.
  • The change follows Prime Minister Evika Siliņa’s resignation after recent drone incidents and growing concern about border security with Russia, a context that could drive new defence and air‑defence measures.
