Overview
- Resorts reported about 20–25cm of fresh snow on the main NSW and Victorian alpine fields, with the Perisher snow stake and meteorologists confirming the totals and ongoing snow at higher elevations.
- The new snow has allowed chairlifts to restart at Perisher and prompted Selwyn and other resorts to open runs and prepare for the school-holiday rush and interschools events.
- Perisher warned that recent snowfall created hazardous road conditions on Kosciuszko Road and advised visitors to carry and fit tyre chains and expect slush and drifting around alpine villages.
- Short-term forecasts call for cooler, low-humidity conditions that will favor additional natural snow and give resorts better windows to make artificial snow and expand terrain coverage.
- Longer-term prospects remain unclear because of an ongoing El Niño and BoM forecasts for above-average July–August temperatures, although historical Snowy Hydro records show some late starts have still reached typical peak depths.
