Larry Birkhead Objects to Doctor-Based Anna Nicole Smith Biopic

His complaint to the California Medical Board could trigger a professional ethics review of the doctor whose memoir inspired the film.

Overview

  • Birkhead told Entertainment Tonight that he and his family do not consent to Trust Me, I’m a Doctor and that the film will cause emotional harm to his daughter Dannielynn.
  • He said he has filed a complaint with the California Medical Board over Dr. Sandeep Kapoor’s participation in the movie and will let the board’s process play out.
  • The film is adapted from Kapoor’s 2017 memoir, stars Abbie Cornish as Anna Nicole Smith and Kal Penn as Kapoor, and is scheduled to open on October 16.
  • Kapoor was charged after Smith’s 2007 death but was acquitted by a jury in 2010; his book frames the story from his perspective and has drawn criticism from Smith’s family.
  • Following a July 9 Entertainment Tonight interview, Birkhead has renewed public objections to retellings of Smith’s life and raised questions about who owns and profits from her story.
