Large Russian Missile and Drone Strike Ravages Kyiv

The attack revealed gaps in Ukraine’s air defences that officials say could accelerate deliveries of Western interceptors.

Overview

  • The Russian strike on the night of 23–24 May concentrated on Kyiv and used roughly 90 missiles and about 600 strike drones, according to Ukrainian officials.
  • Kyiv authorities say the bombardment damaged as many as 300 objects in the city, including nearly 150 residential buildings, and left two people dead with about 87–92 injured.
  • Multiple cultural and historical sites were hit with heavy losses reported at the National Chornobyl Museum and damage to the National Art Museum, Ukrainian House, the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature, and other landmarks.
  • Hundreds of rescuers and emergency teams worked for days to clear debris and document damage with 871 personnel and 201 fire-rescue units deployed, diplomats visited impact sites, and prosecutors arrested an 18-year-old accused of relaying strike data to Russian handlers.
  • Analysts say Russia used massed drones to try to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences, Ukrainian forces reported high interception rates but some ballistic and cruise weapons penetrated, and Kyiv is pressing partners for more air-defence systems and diplomatic pressure on Moscow.
