Overview
- A large fire broke out at the Convent Of Mercy on Stream Street in Downpatrick, which was reported at about 7pm on Sunday and was declared dealt with by 10:03am the following morning.
- Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service mobilised up to 70 firefighters and ten appliances from multiple stations, supported by two aerial units, a command support unit and a water tanker.
- The fire service says the blaze is believed to have been started deliberately and police are holding the scene while they appeal for witnesses to report information using reference 1509 28/06/26.
- Officials warned the public to avoid the area and asked nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed as thick smoke and visible flames, including a roof blaze, spread through the building.
- The 1870s former convent had planning permission for conversion to flats, so investigators will assess both structural and heritage damage and the outcome could affect local redevelopment plans.
