Overview
- A landslide struck the New Harangajao station yard on the night of Thursday, July 23, severely damaging about 200 metres of track on Lines 1 and 2 and making both tracks unsuitable for trains.
- All traffic through the hill section is being run on Line 3 at reduced speed limits of 10 km/h, and passenger services are suspended nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., causing multiple reschedulings and cancellations.
- Northeast Frontier Railway says restoration work is on a war footing with more than 700 labourers, Poclains and JCBs, and continuous supplies of ballast, boulders, sandbags and stone dust being used to stabilise and rebuild the formation.
- The disruption compounds wider monsoon damage across Assam, where heavy rains and floods have affected over 1.1 million people, placed about 115,000 in relief camps, and raised the state death toll to more than 61.
- Railway officials say full service will resume only after safety-certified repairs and geotechnical checks, so progress will depend on weather and ongoing engineering assessments and travellers should expect delays until conditions stabilise.
