Lancaster Parents Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Decapitating Two Children

The judge cited a lack of remorse in ordering consecutive life terms.

Overview

  • Maurice Jewel Taylor Sr., 39, and Natalie Sumiko Brothwell, 49, were convicted in November 2025 of two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances and two counts of child abuse for the Nov. 29, 2020 killings.
  • On Monday, the court imposed two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole plus six additional years in state prison.
  • Judge Lisa M. Strassner denied a motion for a new trial, finding the jury’s verdict fully supported by the evidence.
  • A 10-year protective order was issued for the surviving sons, whom prosecutors say were forced to view the bodies and confined without food for several days.
  • Authorities discovered the victims after firefighters responded to a reported gas leak; Taylor was arrested on Dec. 4, 2020, and Brothwell was captured in Tucson in September 2021.
