Lake Mead’s Decline Reveals Human Remains on Boulder Beach

The find signals record low reservoir levels driven by prolonged drought alongside water-management choices are exposing remains that will take months of forensic work.

Visitors found a jawbone and other bones at Boulder Beach, which occurred Sunday, Aug. 16, and National Park Service rangers and Las Vegas police recovered the remains.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department filed a non‑criminal dead body report and park officials said there was no immediate indication of criminal activity while the Clark County coroner works to identify the person.
Federal data place Lake Mead near 1,039.66 feet above sea level, a near‑century low that has rapidly exposed shoreline and former lakebed sites.
Since 2022 at least six sets of remains have emerged as the lake fell, including a body in a metal barrel tied to a likely 1970s–80s homicide and several cases later identified as drownings by the Clark County coroner.
Managers warn more remains and artifacts will surface as levels continue to fall, a change that could prompt further beach closures, lengthy forensic and jurisdictional work, and added strain on regional water and power supplies linked to the reservoir.
