Lahore Court Grants Bail to Five in Data Darbar Manhole Deaths After Heirs Forgive

The magistrate accepted a written compromise after the victims' heirs told the court they had pardoned the accused.

Overview

  • Judicial Magistrate Shafqat Abbas granted post-arrest bail to five suspects on surety bonds of Rs50,000 each.
  • The complainant, Sajid Hussain, and the deceased woman's husband, Murtaza, told the court they would not pursue the case and had no objection to acquittal or discharge.
  • Those presented in court were Project Manager Asghar Sandhu, contractor company CEO Salman Yasin, Site Incharge Hunzala, Ahmed Nawaz and Daniyal.
  • Defence counsel said the company owner had surrendered to police and provided a Rs10 million cheque to the family, which preceded the written pardon submitted to the court.
  • Police had registered a Section 322 manslaughter case after the mother and her 10-month-old daughter died in an uncovered manhole near Data Darbar last month, prompting earlier arrest orders from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
