LAFD Honored With Award of Excellence Star Next to Hollywood Walk of Fame

The civic tribute was inspired by a 14-year-old’s essay nominating firefighters for their work during January’s Palisades and Sunset fires.

Overview

  • The star was unveiled Friday outside the Ovation Entertainment Complex at a ceremony hosted by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Hollywood Community Foundation.
  • Organizers said the honor recognizes the department’s public service during January’s Palisades and Sunset fires in Pacific Palisades and the Hollywood Hills.
  • The idea originated with a letter from 14-year-old Eniola Taiwo of Connecticut, written for an eighth-grade assignment on personal heroes.
  • The Award of Excellence is separate from the official Walk of Fame program and has been awarded to fewer than 10 organizations, including the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers and Disneyland.
  • LAFD Chief Jaime Moore accepted the tribute, noting firefighters do not seek recognition, and organizers said the event received financial support from the Walt Disney Co.
