LA Metro Approves K Line Northern Extension to Hollywood

The decision advances a 9.7-mile tunnel to link Hollywood to the South Bay by rail.

Overview

  • Metro’s board approved the San Vicente–Fairfax alignment, adding a Hollywood Bowl station and closing a key north–south gap in the rail network.
  • The extension runs from Expo/Crenshaw through Crenshaw, Mid-City and the Fairfax District to West Hollywood and Hollywood with 10 new stations.
  • Key stops will serve Cedars-Sinai, the Pacific Design Center, the Grove and the Hollywood Bowl, which puts major job and entertainment hubs on one line.
  • Construction is slated to start in 2041 with projected completion between 2047 and 2049, using partial Measure M funding and a $2 billion pledge from West Hollywood.
  • Metro has cited a roughly $15 billion price tag and tens of thousands of anticipated daily trips, while Mayor Karen Bass predicted the line would lead U.S. light rail in ridership and local critics questioned the long timeline and funding demands.
