La Joya Residents Block Panamericana Sur After Weeks Without Potable Water

A stalled eight-year transfer of the local water plant to Sedapar plus missing repair materials have left communities without a technical fix.

Overview

  • The blockade on the Panamericana Sur began on Tuesday, July 14, and has left dozens of vehicles stranded while National Police and road-protection units secure the site.
  • Residents from 22–23 housing associations say a rupture of a main pipeline about three weeks ago cut supply to more than 20 sectors and triggered the protest.
  • Protest leaders presented three demands: immediate repair of the broken main line, clear information and completion of the transfer to Sedapar, and the presence of regional governor Rohel Sánchez.
  • Local officials say the district municipality has been delivering emergency water but cannot run the potable-water project, and a regional adviser told leaders the government currently lacks materials to repair the main pipeline.
  • Neighbors also allege informal taps on the conduction line are reducing downstream flow, a claim that residents and authorities say complicates distribution and could prolong shortages unless repairs and administrative transfer move forward.
