LA County Seizes 316 Dogs and Cats From Lake Hughes Rescue in Major Welfare Probe

Animals cannot be adopted until a court order allows their release.

Overview

  • Officials now place the count at about 250 dogs and 66 cats taken from the Rock N Pawz property during the March 20 search.
  • The warrant cited alleged animal-welfare violations; more than 70 DACC staff with DA investigators and partners including spcaLA, Pasadena Humane and Kern County Animal Services removed and triaged the animals.
  • County shelters expanded Sunday hours for emergency placements to free space, though the seized animals remain evidence and are being distributed for medical evaluation across care centers.
  • Rock N Pawz director Christine De’Anda disputes officials’ account and alleges some dogs were hurt during removal, while authorities say the investigation continues with no arrests or charges announced.
  • Additional animals, including a rabbit, two goats, a pig, a goose and a parrot, were also removed according to county tallies, and officials cite longstanding neighbor complaints and significant strain on shelter resources.
