L.A. County Charges Santa Monica Man in UCLA Kidnapping, 2025 Culver City Rape

Prosecutors now aim to raise bail at a May 4 arraignment review.

Overview

  • Los Angeles County prosecutors charged Alexander William Schecter with kidnapping to commit another crime, forcible rape, two counts of forcible oral copulation, and first-degree residential robbery, saying the counts could bring roughly 37 to 38 years to life.
  • Investigators say he picked up a UCLA student on March 8 in the 500 block of Landfair Avenue, refused to let her out, threatened violence, and drove about a half mile to Gayley Avenue.
  • Detectives later linked him to an Oct. 12, 2025 rape near Venice Boulevard and Clarington Avenue in Culver City, and they say that victim has no known ties to UCLA.
  • His arraignment and a bail review were continued to May 4, and prosecutors plan to ask the judge for a higher bond, with local outlets reporting a $1.4 million request.
  • He was first arrested on March 12 and released on bail, then re-arrested about two weeks later after new evidence tied him to the 2025 case, and the district attorney praised the victims for coming forward and urged others to contact UCLA Police.
