Damascus gains formal control over former SDF areas, signaling a shift in authority that could curb Kurdish autonomy.

Overview

  • SDF commander Mazloum Abdi announced the group's dissolution on Tuesday, Aug. 25, saying the phased merger with Syrian army brigades is complete.
  • Core Kurdish units have already been folded into state structures, including the March appointment of YPG commander Sipan Hamo as deputy defence minister for eastern territories.
  • Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has issued measures recognising Kurdish language and cultural rights, restoring many citizenships, and promising Kurdish-language education this year.
