Kuki Body Ends 16-Day Blockade, Reopens Imphal-Dimapur Highway

Overview

  • The Kuki Civil Society Organisation lifted its counter-economic blockade and highway shutdown on Tuesday, allowing more than 460 stranded goods vehicles to resume travel along NH-2.
  • A Manipur government team led by Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh and MLA Thokchom Radheshyam Singh met WCKCSO representatives at Shangkai Village and signed a handwritten agreement on security and access.
  • The written pledge commits the government to ensure safety on NH-2 and to prevent any group from imposing selective blockades, and the WCKCSO said it will expect the assurances to be implemented in full.
  • The Kuki group had started the counter-blockade on July 27 and intensified it into a total shutdown from August 5, saying it was a response to an alleged selective restriction on the Kuki-Zo community by some Tangkhul Naga and Meitei groups.
  • Reopening the route restores a key supply line for landlocked Manipur but durability depends on government follow-through and easing of broader inter-community tensions, while some other blockades reported in the state remain unresolved.
