Kouri Richins to Be Sentenced Today for Husband’s Fentanyl Murder

Prosecutors urge a life-without-parole term based on the boys’ safety statements submitted to the court.

Overview

  • The Utah mother, convicted in March after a weekslong trial, returns to a Park City courtroom Wednesday for a sentence that could be 25 years to life or life without parole, on what would have been Eric Richins’ 44th birthday.
  • Prosecutors asked the judge to impose life without parole and filed statements from the couple’s three sons saying they would feel unsafe if their mother were ever released.
  • The sentencing memo also seeks a no-contact order with the children and Eric Richins’ family and requests more than $1.3 million in restitution to insurers plus about $1.4 million to Summit County.
  • Jurors found she killed Eric Richins by slipping fentanyl into his drink at roughly five times a lethal dose and also convicted her of a prior Valentine’s Day poisoning attempt, insurance fraud, and forgery.
  • A separate case still pending charges her with more than two dozen financial crimes, including alleged mortgage fraud and money laundering.
