Kolkata Police Launch All-Women Pink Booths and 'Shining' Night Patrols

The pilot targets quicker assistance for women following recent harassment reports.

Overview

  • Five Pink Booths staffed by women officers are now operating 5 pm–11 pm at Shyambazar Five-Point, Kankurgachi, Hudco (Ultadanga) Crossing, Gariahat and Behala Chowrasta.
  • 'Shining' all-women mobile patrols have begun night duty 8 pm–2 am along the E.M. Bypass and other major roads used by late-night commuters.
  • Each booth provides CCTV-linked monitoring, wireless communication, a telephone, first-aid, a changing room, a washroom and key contact information for nearby services.
  • Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar inaugurated the booths and patrol vehicles, with movements tracked from a control room and patrol timings subject to adjustment.
  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the initiatives as a pilot to improve access, deterrence and response times, with officials indicating scope to scale coverage citywide.
