Kolkata Police Announce Citywide Rollout of 20 Women-Run ‘Pink Booths’ for Night Safety

The network targets safer nights by placing female teams at key intersections to provide refuge with rapid police coordination.

Overview

  • Twenty booths will be set up across 10 police divisions with two per division at carefully surveyed intersections.
  • Each booth will operate through the night under a woman officer-in-charge supported by a team of three to five women personnel.
  • Staff will offer temporary shelter, help lodge complaints, coordinate with control rooms or stations, and arrange safe transport when needed.
  • Women sub-inspectors have been designated as nodal officers at every police station to serve as trusted points of contact for cases involving crimes against women.
  • The rollout follows a November 28 case in which a woman was allegedly drugged and molested in a moving car, with police arresting Altaf Alam and searching for other suspects.
