Overview
- Kolkata Police ordered Red Road closed to all vehicular movement from 10:00 pm on June 14 through the end of the International Day of Yoga programme on June 21, and work to erect a stage is already under way.
- Authorities will enforce broad movement curbs on goods vehicles starting at 02:00 on June 21 and will close Guru Nanak Sarani (Mayo Road) to all but cars displaying event stickers for the duration of the programme.
- Multiple central arteries and neighbourhoods will be affected, with Esplanade, Maidan, Hastings and BBD Bagh among the areas facing major disruption.
- Kolkata Police published detailed diversion plans naming Outram Road, JL Nehru Road, Dufferin Road, Belvedere Road and AJC Bose Road as alternatives for northbound, southbound and bus traffic and warned that additional diversions may be imposed based on crowd or traffic conditions.
- The event is reported to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and on June 17 a petition was mentioned in the Calcutta High Court challenging the seven-day closure and seeking continued pedestrian and vehicular access.
