Kojima Says He Was Never Told of Wachowskis’ 1999 Matrix Game Offer

His account conflicts with a former Konami executive’s recollection of a direct pitch that Konami rejected on the spot.

Overview

  • Posting on X, Hideo Kojima wrote that he learned only now of a supposed Matrix game proposal and that no one informed him of any offer in 1999.
  • Kojima said he arrived at Konami headquarters after the meeting with executive Kazumi Kitaue had ended, spoke with the filmmakers later, and heard no mention of a game.
  • Time Extension previously reported former Konami VP Christopher Bergstresser’s claim that the Wachowskis asked Kojima to make the game and that Kitaue immediately said no.
  • An anonymous ex-Konami employee told Time Extension that Kojima showed strong interest and that his team was disappointed, a detail now at odds with Kojima’s statement.
  • Kojima noted he was extremely busy with Metal Gear Solid 2 at the time yet suggested he might have found a way to make the project work if he had known, and Konami has not issued an official comment.
