Kochi Airport to Pilot India’s First Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Passenger Buses

The pilot funds three buses for delivery within a year under Kerala’s Hydrogen Valley programme.

Overview

  • Kerala HVIC Foundation and Cochin International Airport Ltd signed a memorandum of agreement on February 1 to launch the pilot at Kochi.
  • Funding is capped at ₹2.90 crore per bus with a total outlay of ₹8.7 crore released in stages, and ownership will vest with CIAL.
  • CIAL will handle operations, statutory expenses and route decisions once the three buses are delivered.
  • Fuel will come from a green hydrogen plant being developed by CIAL and BPCL that officials say is scheduled to begin operations soon, with statutory approvals already in place.
  • The initiative is part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and is expected to cut airport transport emissions while improving passenger convenience.
