Knife-Wielding Suspect in Arden-Arcade Re-Arrested, Held Without Bail

The case has put a spotlight on how probation holds determine whether someone stays in jail after an arrest.

Overview

  • Brian Mattson, who was arrested twice Saturday, remains in the Sacramento County Main Jail on a probation violation hold with no bail and a court date set for Tuesday.
  • Ring doorbell video from Thursday showed him gripping a knife and pacing on La Sierra Drive as neighbors called 911, and officials said no one was hurt.
  • Deputies first booked him on misdemeanor trespassing, but probation declined a hold that would keep a person on probation in jail for a possible rules breach, so he was released in about 90 minutes.
  • Hours after that release, deputies arrested him again near Fair Oaks Boulevard and San Lucas Way, and probation then approved a violation hold.
  • Residents say the episode shook the neighborhood and they are organizing safety meetings and stronger communication, while the sheriff’s office asks anyone with related incidents to come forward.
