Knicks Ticker-Tape Parade Set for Thursday With Heavily Bolstered Security

Officials say a counterterrorism-style security plan follows weekend street disorder and will not change school or Regents schedules.

Overview

  • City Hall confirmed the Knicks will have a ticker-tape parade starting at 10 a.m. Thursday that will begin near Battery Park and march north through Broadway’s Canyon of Heroes to City Hall.
  • NYPD and city officials said they will deploy New Year’s Eve–level measures, including helicopters, explosive-detection dogs, undercover officers, an anti-drone unit and staged sanitation trucks as a counterterrorism overlay.
  • Authorities pointed to weekend post-game incidents as the reason for the heightened posture, reporting 63 arrests, multiple officer injuries, several shootings including a 17-year-old hit by gunfire, and vandalism to vehicles and buses.
  • The State Education Department and the mayor’s office confirmed there will be no changes to city school hours or the state Regents exam schedule on Thursday.
  • City agencies are finalizing street closures, transit adjustments and viewing rules for what officials say could be one of the largest parades in New York history, and they urge fans to arrive early and expect major crowd and travel impacts.
