Klein Oak Senior Kenrik Kabano and His Mother Killed in I-45 Crash as DPS Investigation Continues

Investigators say a turn toward an emergency-only median cutout preceded the collision.

Overview

  • The two-vehicle crash near mile marker 140 on I-45 in Madison County, which occurred Monday around 6:36 p.m., killed driver Rosine Kabano, 44, and her 18-year-old son, Kenrik, and left two people in the pickup with minor injuries.
  • Texas DPS reports the Mitsubishi was traveling on the shoulder and turned left across the southbound lanes toward a median cutout reserved for emergencies when a pickup towing a utility trailer struck it.
  • Kenrik was pronounced dead at the scene, and his mother died later at CHI St. Joseph Health in Bryan, with state troopers continuing to investigate the crash.
  • Klein Oak High School remembered Kenrik as a first-team all-district basketball player with academic honors, and he also represented Rwanda at the 2023 FIBA U16 AfroBasket in Tunisia.
  • Community support has grown quickly, with a verified GoFundMe surpassing $73,000 by Thursday and funeral services set for May 2 at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home.
