Kīlauea’s Episode 43 Eruption Shoots 1,300-Foot Fountains, Forces Closures and Flight Disruptions

USGS elevated alerts to Warning/Red following tephra fallout across downwind communities.

  • Episode 43 began around 9:17 a.m. HST with twin summit vents fountaining more than 1,000–1,300 feet inside Halemaʻumaʻu.
  • An ash plume rose to roughly 25,000–30,000 feet, prompting an NWS Ashfall Warning for areas downwind of the summit.
  • Tephra coated Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and nearby neighborhoods, with fragments up to several inches reported in Volcano Village, Mauna Loa Estates and at park overlooks.
  • Authorities closed the park’s summit area and Highway 11 between mile markers 24 and 40, and airlines canceled or diverted flights at Hilo International Airport.
  • Lava remained confined to the crater as the eruptive episode ended around 6:21 p.m. HST, with USGS maintaining Volcano Alert Level WARNING and Aviation Color Code RED as monitoring continued.
