King’s Baton Begins Scottish Tour as Glasgow Prepares to Host Reimagined 2026 Games

Organisers say the slimmed-down 10-sport Games will be covered by Commonwealth Games Federation compensation without calling on the Scottish public purse.

Overview

  • The King’s Baton Relay started its Scottish leg on Wednesday, July 1, when swimmer Duncan Scott sailed up the River Clyde and handed the baton ashore where he was greeted by First Minister John Swinney.
  • Glasgow will stage the reimagined Commonwealth Games from 23 July to 2 August 2026 in a pared-back format featuring 10 sports after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host.
  • Organisers say compensation from the Commonwealth Games Federation will fund hosting costs, the UK government will offer limited contingency support for security, and the Scottish Government will not be asked to underwrite the event.
  • The Scottish Government has committed £20 million to free and low-cost youth sporting activities and has provided £245,000 to support more than 50 free relay events across Scotland.
  • Team Scotland’s baton was made by woodcarver Annie Graham from three interlocking pieces of sustainably sourced ash and will visit more than 50 community events as organisers seek to use the Games to boost participation and leave a local legacy.
