King Charles Confirms Nine Honours Forfeited in March Gazette Notice

The move followed formal recommendations from the Cabinet Office’s Honours Forfeiture Committee.

Overview

  • The London Gazette on March 5 recorded the cancellation and annulment of nine appointments to the Order of the British Empire.
  • Former Scotland rugby international Stuart Hogg lost his MBE after pleading guilty to domestic abuse, and owl sanctuary founder Paul Allen Rose was removed following animal welfare convictions.
  • Other names on the list include Ian Ashbold, Lloyd Hamilton and Graham Trewhella for criminal convictions; Nigel O’Connor and Tony Reilly for professional censure; Angela Middleton and Anant Shah for bringing the honours system into disrepute.
  • Under the forfeiture process, recipients are erased from the Order’s register after the King’s direction and must return their insignia to the Central Chancery.
  • Government guidance says honours can be withdrawn for serious misconduct, with grounds including criminal convictions leading to prison sentences of three months or more.
