Kim Holds Narrow Lead in Democratic Party Leadership Race

Honam and Greater Seoul bloc voting will likely decide the winner ahead of the Aug. 17 convention that will combine member ballots with national opinion polls.

Overview

  • After four of six regional member rounds, Kim Min-seok leads Jung Chung-rae by roughly 46.0% to 44.5% based on party-released tallies.
  • Two final regional rounds in Honam on Aug. 15 and Seoul plus Gyeonggi on Aug. 16 will decide the race because Honam contains about one-third of party members and Seoul with Gyeonggi hold roughly 580,000 members.
  • A new party rule gives extra weight to votes in Daegu and the southeastern provinces, which shifted earlier regional results and helped make the contest tighter.
  • Campaign friction has focused on Jung’s repeated slip calling President Lee by the wrong name and on Kim’s allegation of Shincheonji interference, with Jung publicly rejecting split speculation and disputing the interference claim.
  • The party will confirm its new leader at a televised national convention on Aug. 17 and that leader will oversee candidate selection for the April 2028 parliamentary elections, shaping the party’s direction and internal unity going forward.
