Khattar Fixes Timelines to Accelerate Chenab Hydropower Buildout After J&K Site Review

The push follows the Indus Waters Treaty being kept in abeyance, enabling new storage and flow-management steps on the western rivers.

Overview

  • During a two-day visit, the Union power minister reviewed Salal, Sawalkot, Ratle, Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar and Dulhasti across Reasi, Ramban and Kishtwar.
  • He directed commissioning of Pakal Dul and Kiru by December 2026 and of Kwar by March 2028, with agencies told to enforce quality and safety standards.
  • At Ratle, he laid the foundation stone for dam concreting and ordered faster execution to keep the project on schedule.
  • NHPC was told to expedite desilting at the Salal reservoir to maximise domestic use of Chenab flows following the treaty’s suspension.
  • Jammu & Kashmir Police flagged hires at Ratle allegedly linked to militants, with Khattar saying he will act if a written complaint is filed as the issue awaits formal review.
