KfW Finds Renewables Now Supply Most of Germany’s Electricity, With Few Wind and Sun Gaps

The bank says resilience now hinges on targeted backup to bridge short seasonal lulls.

Overview

  • Using Bundesnetzagentur data, KfW reports renewables supplied 56% of Germany’s consumed power last year, with wind at 29%, solar at 16%, and biomass plus hydropower at 11%.
  • For the first time, wind and solar together led generation, providing 45% of electricity consumed.
  • Days with simultaneously low wind and solar averaged about 15 per year over 2023–2025, with 14 in 2023, 12 in 2024, and 19 in 2025.
  • All low-output days occurred between October and February, showing a clear seasonal pattern.
  • Supply on those days was maintained through higher imports and increased coal and gas generation, and KfW urges targeted biomass use, more batteries, flexible demand, and hydrogen‑ready gas plants.
