Overview
- Police, conducting a welfare check the night of April 30 in Schaumburg, forced entry, found Katherine Torbick, 43, a gastroenterology nurse and mother, dead inside, and arrested Kevin Motykie in the garage.
- Officers recovered a digital recorder from Motykie that, prosecutors say, captured a 2:00 to 9:24 a.m. assault with handcuffs, repeated sexual assaults, beatings, and the fatal strangulation, including threats and statements attributed to him on the tape.
- The medical examiner ruled strangulation a homicide and documented neck marks, bruising, and other trauma consistent with a prolonged attack.
- Prosecutors filed first-degree murder and, on May 8, added aggravated criminal sexual assault counts, and a judge ordered Motykie held without bail with further hearings set later in May.
- Court records describe prior alleged abuse: Torbick filed a felony complaint in March, gave a video statement saying she feared he would kill her, and an arrest warrant for aggravated domestic battery was still active when police arrived.
