Kerala High Court Sets Oct. 25 Screening of Malayalam Film 'Haal' in CBFC Cuts Dispute

The judge ordered a private viewing to weigh the censor board’s demand for an adults-only certificate with cuts to sensitive interfaith depictions, with further hearing on October 30.

Overview

  • Justice V. G. Arun will watch the film at 7 p.m. on October 25 at Padamugal Colour Planet studio in Kakkanad in the presence of the filmmakers and CBFC representatives.
  • The CBFC’s revising committee recommended an A certificate subject to deletions and modifications, citing scenes such as eating beef biryani and a song sequence using a burqa.
  • Other requested changes include blurring the name of Holy Angels College of Nursing, modifying a police interrogation scene, and obtaining consent for the depiction of the Thamarassery Bishop.
  • Producer Juby Thomas and director Veera petitioned the court, arguing the contested scenes are integral to the narrative, noting a delayed September 12 release and production costs of about ₹15 crore.
  • The court has allowed the Catholic Congress to intervene after it alleged the film hurts Christian sentiments and portrays the Bishop as endorsing interfaith marriages linked to “love jihad.”
