Kerala High Court Restores Land-Tax Payments for Munambam Residents in Waqf Dispute

Overview

  • On November 26, a single-judge bench directed the District Collector, Tahsildar and Village Officer to accept property tax from residents on the contested Munambam holding.
  • Residents began remitting tax at local revenue offices following the ruling as officials were told to accept payments without obstruction.
  • Petitioners also sought mutation, transfers and encumbrance certificates, but the court granted only tax acceptance as an interim measure.
  • An October 9 Division Bench held the 1950 deed to Farook College was a gift rather than a Waqf endowment and found the Waqf Board’s 2019 registration legally flawed.
  • A Special Leave Petition challenging that Division Bench ruling has been filed in the Supreme Court, and the BJP has urged the Centre to implead as state leaders reiterate that residents will not be evicted.
