Overview
- The High Court, which admitted the State’s appeal on Monday, June 22, has called for the trial court records and appointed Advocate V. Ajakumar as Special Public Prosecutor.
- The State is challenging the trial court’s acquittals of actor Dileep and three others for alleged criminal conspiracy and is also seeking tougher punishment for the convicted.
- A trial court in Ernakulam in December convicted six men, including prime accused Sunil N.S. alias Pulsar Suni, and sentenced them to 20 years for rape, abduction and related offences.
- A Division Bench of Justices Raja Vijayaraghavan V. and K.V. Jayakumar is handling Case Nos. Crl.A 295/2026 and connected matters and has listed hearings, including sentence-suspension petitions, after two weeks.
- If the High Court reopens findings, judges will re-examine evidence cited by the State such as meeting records and phone material and that review could change sentences and affect the survivor’s quest for justice and public trust in the investigation.
