Kerala CPI(M) Files Privilege Notice Against Opposition Leader After Sonia Gandhi Query in Sabarimala Theft Probe

The Speaker’s office will decide on referring the notice to the Ethics and Privileges Committee.

Overview

  • MLA V. Joy moved a breach of privilege notice under Rule 154 against Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan for allegedly demeaning Education Minister V. Sivankutty, calling it a first against an opposition leader in the Kerala Assembly.
  • Speaker A. N. Shamseer’s office said the notice is being vetted for possible referral to the Assembly’s Ethics and Privileges Committee.
  • The confrontation followed Sivankutty’s call for the High Court–appointed SIT to question Sonia Gandhi over photographs showing prime suspects Unnikrishnan Potti and Bellary-based jeweller Govardhan at her New Delhi residence with Congress leaders.
  • Sivankutty cited the suspects’ access to a high-security residence, a purported Bellary sale link, and the need to examine possible hawala or smuggling channels, framing his demand as a legal step in the ongoing probe.
  • CPI(M) leader M. A. Baby said the party was not directly accusing Sonia Gandhi, as Satheesan condemned Sivankutty’s remarks, sought their removal from Assembly records, and offered to withdraw his own comments if the minister retracts.
