Kerala Announces Operation Toofan To Target Synthetic Drugs and Campus Supply Chains

The intelligence-led campaign is designed to protect students by dismantling inter-state narcotics networks before schools reopen on June 1.

Overview

  • Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala unveiled Operation Toofan on Saturday and set the statewide anti-narcotics drive to begin on June 1, timed with the reopening of schools.
  • The operation will prioritise intelligence- and data-driven action against synthetic drugs, hybrid ganja networks and repeat offenders linked to inter-state supply chains.
  • Police will step up surveillance of venues where drugs are reported to be sold or used, including five-star hotels, DJ parties, backwater gatherings and areas near schools.
  • All 484 police stations will be transformed into people-friendly service centres and a five-member ADGP-led committee will review officer deployment at station level.
  • The government will strengthen Janamaithri community policing, expand the Student Police Cadet programme, revise police training and add technology for cybercrime and road-safety work, responding to high arrest numbers and concerns about new-age drug use.
