Kerala Adds 28 Communities to SEBC List for Higher-Education Benefits

The move follows a backward classes panel recommendation to fix gaps left by the 1965 Kumara Pillai list.

  • Students from the newly included groups will now qualify for reservation and other educational concessions in higher education.
  • The Chief Minister's Office said these communities were on the OBC list but excluded from SEBC, which denied them benefits for years.
  • Communities named include Ambalakkaran, Anchunadu Vellalar, SIUC-Nadar, Naidu, Thachar (carpenter), Thol Kollans, Vishavan (Malabar), Ezhuthasan, Vanians, Yogis, Shaiva Vellala, Kaniyar and the Ezhava-Theya section.
  • Officials and education experts said the decision aims to expand fair access to higher studies and address long-standing inequalities.
