Kent Spray Painter Revealed Behind Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala Breastplate

A Kent car painter completed the glossy orange finish in 24 hours under tight secrecy.

Overview

  • MPS Body & Paint in Lydd, Kent, spray-painted the orange fiberglass breastplate in a one-day rush, owner Martyn Smith said, after Whitaker Malem brought him the piece and swore him to secrecy.
  • The wearable torso came from an Allen Jones mold from the late 1960s, with the artist’s form adapted into a trimmed breastplate and paired with a leather half-skirt by Whitaker Malem.
  • Jones, 88, painted the attached leather elements for the final look, according to the designers’ account reported in the UK press.
  • Kardashian later posted behind-the-scenes photos that showed earlier versions in different colors and a backless strap setup, with the fittings shot by photographer Nadia Lee Cohen.
  • The team built the ensemble in about three weeks with fittings in Oxfordshire and Dalston, and the piece traces back to Jones’s body casts also seen in a 2013 Kate Moss portrait that sold at Christie’s.
