Kengo Kuma Design Unveiled for Global War on Terrorism Memorial on the National Mall

The concept links 9/11 relics, reclaimed combat steel and interactive elements and now shifts the project into private fundraising and approvals.

Overview

  • The Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation revealed the initial design concept by Kengo Kuma on June 10, 2026, marking a public design milestone and moving the effort toward fundraising and approval steps.
  • The design frames three entrances with steel and stone relics from the Sept. 11 attacks and centers on an amphitheater called "the embrace" built from reclaimed combat steel and planted with native vegetation.
  • A marble "path of honor" embedded with service members' footprints and shallow reflecting pools are intended to create an interactive visitor experience that evokes direct connection and reflection.
  • The concept was shaped by broad public input from more than 20,000 Americans and by a 23‑member Design Advisory Council of Gold Star family members, veterans and service members.
  • The Foundation says construction, programming and long‑term stewardship still need to be completed, the project will be financed entirely with private donations, and officials plan to seek design approvals and begin fundraising next.
