Ken Russell’s The Devils Returns in 4K Director’s Cut, Premiering at Cannes and Opening in October

Warner Bros. launches its Clockwork label with a restoration built from the original negative to reverse decades of cuts.

Overview

  • Warner Bros. said Wednesday that the 4K director’s cut will premiere in Cannes Classics and play a one-week U.S. run starting Friday, October 16, with the BFI handling the UK rollout.
  • The restoration was assembled from the original camera negative and follows the 2004 edit that Russell prepared as his intended version.
  • Picture and sound work were completed by Warner Bros. Post Production Creative Services, Water Tower Color, and Warner Bros. Sound, with audio remastered from original 35mm mag tracks at 96kHz.
  • Cannes Classics, the festival’s showcase for restored cinema and film heritage, will host the world premiere before the limited theatrical engagement.
  • Long censored and often unavailable, the film now returns in an uncut 114-minute version, and no home-video or streaming plans have been announced.
