Keiko Fujimori Holds Narrow Lead as Peru Presidential Count Remains Unresolved

Overview

• The second-round vote on June 7 left an exceptionally close race and by June 18 ONPE showed Fujimori leading roughly 50.11% to 49.89% with about 99.3–99.4% of ballots counted.
• Around 0.6% of votes, roughly 140,000 ballots, remain contested and under judicial review and about 60% of those come from Lima and the overseas diaspora where Fujimori performs best.
• Both campaigns have filed multiple annulment petitions: Juntos por el Perú seeks to void 1,751 polling tables in Peru and 649 in the U.S., while Força Popular challenged more than 7,000 votes in Puno.
• Roberto Sánchez’s coalition has called nationwide protests for June 19 and warned it may not accept results it sees as nontransparent as election bodies and courts examine the disputes.
• International observers from the OAS and EU reported that voting proceeded normally and electoral officials expect the legal reviews and final certification to extend into July, leaving the outcome dependent on tribunal rulings.
