KCK Officer Shoots Armed Man on Roof During Mental-Health Call

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting to determine whether the officer's use of force should be referred to the Wyandotte County prosecutor.

Overview

  • Police were called for a mental-health crisis and first arrived after 10:30 p.m., where officers de-escalated a 32-year-old man on the roof and left about 12:45 a.m.
  • About ten minutes after officers left, family called again and responders returned around 1:20 a.m. when the man reappeared on the roof reportedly armed with multiple knives.
  • Investigators say the man made throwing motions toward family and officers and one KCKPD officer fired once, striking him; he was taken to a hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has taken over the inquiry as an independent review and will collect evidence and interviews before sending findings to the Wyandotte County district attorney for charging consideration.
  • Family members told reporters the man has serious mental illness, that relatives hid inside the home and that he broke into the basement before the shooting, and the case adds to local scrutiny after other recent officer-involved shootings in the city.
