KCK Firefighters Union Sues Wyandotte County Over Ban on Public Safety Comments

The union is asking a federal judge to restore members’ access to commissioners and committee meetings so firefighters can speak directly about staffing and safety.

Overview

  • IAFF Local 64 filed a federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court alleging violations of firefighters’ First and 14th Amendment rights and asking the court for orders to stop the Unified Government from blocking members’ speech; a temporary restraining order hearing is set for Aug. 12.
  • The suit says union leaders were repeatedly denied requests to address the UG Public Safety Committee and the Board of Commissioners after UG officials cited contract rules and state labor law.
  • The union ties the speech dispute to chronic understaffing on fire rigs, saying crews often run with three people instead of the union’s four-person standard and that staffing shortfalls have put crews at risk.
  • IAFF Local 64 points to a December 2025 floor collapse that seriously injured four firefighters and an investigation that found insufficient staffing contributed to those injuries.
  • The Unified Government counters that an active contract and Kansas law govern communications with elected officials, rejects the lawsuit’s claims, and says it prefers a quick, amicable resolution; the case will test how free-speech protections interact with labor-contract limits and local budget choices.
